Who is the Post Road Chorus?

Post Road is a barbershop harmony chorus registered with Sweet Adelines International. We chartered in 1986, and are proud to be a part of a worldwide organization of women dedicated to perfecting, promoting and performing barbershop music.

What is barbershop?

Is it the same as a cappella singing? A musical performance by a singer or a singing group without instrumental accompaniment is called a cappella. Barbershop is one of the various styles of a cappella, and features melody plus three harmonizing parts. Barbershop harmony creates a rich, full resonating sound that is greater than the sum of the individual voices.

What makes Post Road Chorus special?

It’s the women of Post Road Chorus that make it special! We are proud to be the chorus home to the most friendly, welcoming, strong, confident, and talented women on the planet. Our members span seven decades of womanhood, forging friendships while developing an ensemble sound that can only be created through teamwork and collaboration. We welcome both beginner and advanced singers, and provide direction and instruction for all voices and skill levels. As a group, we prioritize community outreach and camaraderie over choral competitions.

What type of songs does Post Road Chorus sing?

We choose songs from “pop” to Broadway to the Beatles, and more… The variety is what makes it fun! During the holiday season, we focus on holiday songs and carols. We update our musical repertoire every year, bringing in new songs that pique our interest, and retiring old songs that have lost their luster.

What if I can’t read music?

Less than 25% of our current membership reads music, so you’re in good company! Barbershop singing came into existence by ear, and that is still our primary method of learning music. We do have sheet music to help with accuracy, but we also get learning tracks. You can listen to your part alone to learn, practice singing with the other voice part tracks to gain confidence, and use the sheet music for visual reminders. We also spend significant time in rehearsal helping each other learn and polish new music.

What are my responsibilities as a member of the Post Road Chorus?

We are primarily together for the enjoyment of creating and sharing beautiful music, and to that end everyone benefits when as many members attend our weekly rehearsals on Tuesdays, 7:00-9:30pm as possible. We perform twice a year in thanks to the Briarwood community for hosting our rehearsal space, and periodically perform in the community. We pay $35 in monthly dues to be in Sweet Adelines, and to cover chorus costs (director fees, new music, costumes, etc). We all have a variety of priorities in life; attend as you are able, and if you have financial concerns please talk to leadership about options.

> How can I join?

Visit a few rehearsals on Tuesday nights (sign up on Meetup, call/text/email, or just stop by!). Rehearsals are the best way to get to know us, and to fall in love with our chorus. Hope to see you soon!
